FX has greenlit the pilot for Powers, an adaptation of the long-running comic series by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming.

The announcement was made tonight on Twitter by John Soldberg, the cable network’s senior vice president of public relations, who revealed the pilot will be directed by executive producer Michael Dinner (Justified, Sons of Anarchy). The script is by Charles “Chic” Eglee, former executive producer of The Walking Dead and veteran of such television series as Murder One, The Shield and Dexter.

“Powers pilot was just greenlit by FX!” Bendis responded on Twitter. “It’s official! Your window of reading Powers while it was still cool is running out.”

Debuting in 2000 from Image Comics, Powers follows the lives of Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, homicide detectives who investigate cases involving “powers” (people with superhuman abilities) in a world where superheroes and supervillains are common. The series continued at Image until 2004, when it moved under Marvel’s Icon banner.

Although Powers had been optioned for film by Sony as early as 2001, Bendis revealed in February 2009 that a TV adaptation was in active development at FX, home to such dramas as The Shield, Rescue Me, Sons of Anarchy and now Justified.

The series is a co-production of Sony and FX Productions.
