Presumably emboldened by Friday’s official casting of Thor star Chris Hemsworth in a lead role, Universal Pictures has moved the opening of Snow White and the Huntsman to June 1, 2012 — four weeks ahead of Relativity Media’s rival fairy-tale adaptation.

Huntsman originally was set for a December release, some six months after the Tarsem Singh-directed The Brothers Grimm: Snow White. Deadline notes that “being the second film on the same subject is perilous,” which of course raises the question of whether will now shuffle its take on Snow White.

Hemsworth’s signing ends a lengthy search for the huntsman that led Universal from from Michael Fassbender to Viggo Mortensen to Hugh Jackman before landing on the rising young actor. He joins a cast in the Rupert Sanders-directed retelling that includes Kristen Stewart as Snow White, Charlize Theron as the evil queen and Sam Claflin as the prince.

Universal has also released the first official synopsis for Snow White and the Hutsman:

In Snow White and the Huntsman, Stewart plays the only person in the land fairer than the evil queen (Theron) who is out to destroy her. But what the wicked ruler never imagined is that the one girl threatening her reign has been training in the art of war with a huntsman (Hemsworth) who was dispatched to kill her. Claflin plays the prince long enchanted by Snow White’s beauty and power.
